Collection: Samsonite
For two years, Samsonite luggage company and esteemed British designer Neil Barrett partnered to create the Travel Wear Collection – a line of inventive and technically advanced clothing that aimed to ease the woes of traveling. Barrett stepped into the role in 1998, after leaving his previous position as head of menswear at Prada. For this reason, Travel Wear has many aesthetic similarities to Prada, especially in terms of fabrication. Despite some criticism of the clothing for being too ‘gimmicky’ (i.e. collapsible walking stick jacket, anti-stress car coat), it was a commercial success and helped revive the Samsonite brand. Barrett left Samsonite in 2000 to pursue his own brand, but the Travel Wear line still stands today as a fun and interesting representation of the Y2K tech wave that permeated the fashion industry.
